The human brain is constantly shaping and reshaping itself throughout your life. This amazing ability, called neuroplasticity, happens as new connections between neurons are made or strengthened, and others are pruned away. For example, when you learn a new skill, such as playing a musical instrument, you’re creating new connections between your brain cells. Each time you practice, the connections become stronger, until the skill becomes second nature. The same thing happens when you learn new information, or create new memories. This intricate process begins while you are still in the womb and surges after birth, when the newborn brain is flooded with information from the senses. Over time, connections that aren’t used are pruned away. Both sprouting and pruning occur throughout our lives.
